Metra announced today that it has received a FY 2016 Transit Security Grant of $3.7 million, which will be used for three distinct security projects.

Metra will spend $294,000 on its continuing public awareness campaign, while $662,500 will be used to purchase new Metra Police radios and equipment. The remaining $2.8 million will be used to enhance rail yard security. These projects are key to improving Metra’s security capabilities.

“Our customers’ safety and security is our highest priority,” said Metra Executive Director/CEO Don Orseno. “We are excited to be working with the Transit Security Grant Program towards our shared goals.”

The Transit Security Grant Program assists with the implementation of the National Preparedness System by awarding funding to transit agencies nationwide, allowing them to build and sustain the core capabilities necessary for reaching the National Preparedness Goal.
